The Station

KAUR is an FM radio station broadcasting from the campus of Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  The station broadcasts at a frequency of 89.1 MHz and offers a roughly 60 mile listening diameter.  KAUR specializes in independent or college rock, but also broadcasts weekly alternative, blues/jazz, folk, Spanish traditional, rap, and metal/hardcore programming.  The station was founded in 1972, although Augustana College once managed a self-constructed AM station which was founded in 1945.

Philosophy of KAUR

KAUR is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to serve Augustana College and the Sioux Falls area.  This means that the station must be responsive to the needs and interests of the entire community.  Because KAUR is licensed to serve the entire community, including Augustana College, station management has planned an on-air schedule that will meet the needs of the public for news, public service, and entertainment. As a non-commercial station, KAUR has the privilege of creating programming that operates outside the constraints of commercial radio and does not intend to duplicate the services of other city stations.  KAUR strives to be the essence of college radio, an important tradition with a heritage of freedom and creativity, and the station exists to provide a unique learning opportunity for Augustana students as well as community members. FM 89 programs a block-formatted selection of music, along with public service announcements and local news/updates.  Noting what other Sioux Falls stations provide, KAUR offers programming designed to provide the community with a wide variety of listening alternatives.  To adopt one of the commercial formats presently being provided would betray KAUR’s most basic policy.  That is, KAUR is on the air to benefit both the community and Augustana College by providing music and services not found on other radio stations.

Our Mission

KAUR prides itself on providing listeners with a good music experience through creativity, professionalism, dedicated DJs, and a committed executive staff.  KAUR aims to (1) provide a learning experience for students; (2) provide a listening alternative for both Augustana and the surrounding area; (3) involve the college with the Sioux Falls community; (4) continue to maintain the significant role college radio plays in the progression of music; (5) create a positive environment for volunteering, and most importantly (6) create an enjoyable and worthwhile music experience for staff, DJs, and listeners alike.
